Assignment is:
In class, present your proposal for using a disciplined approach to evaluating your learning application with users. Describe your research question/hypothesis (see below ) , which variables you plan to study (dynamic versus static tutorial), why these variables were chosen (inconclusive research regarding the effectiveness of animated tutorials as compared with equivalent static graphics and text), the methods by which you will study these variables (as detailed below) and with who (given), and how you will analyze your results (hmmm - looking for themes/common issues identified by our our users?) . Be prepared to comment informally on the expected implications of your study.





SMART has done some beta testing of their products at our school. Our assistant principal negotiated a set of Senteos clickers and a couple of SMART Boards we tested and ultimately kept. Not sure if this is common practice or not, but I would imagine to get our product in the hands of educators, there would need to be some incentive.

I wonder about how much we can reasonably say about our future plans. Isn't it all speculative? I think we should state our intentions but until we have the results of this evaluative process, we will be hard pressed to make any claims that hold up.




A quick question do we also specify how we would measure the learning in future would it be like a summative assessment where in we give our product beta version for free or do we want to approach schools and hand them our product to use and provide us feedback ... Just a thought - Vanita (Not sure about this ??? But, I don't think that we need to say how at this point)( I don't think we need to give details about a pretend future,. Which presentation (dynamic or static) is most effective in teaching users how to use the Virti-Cue application? or is it?? - We aren't testing the use of the application yet, are we? So our question must change - what is it that we are evaluating? We are evaluating the form of the tutorial - right? So would the question change to something like:




JJ: I was thinking about Robin’s question about our inclusion of music in animation....should this be an additional question to the Survey??? Or, could be an informal question during post interview?
As in, “The theme music adds enjoyment”: Strongly agree etc.(Survey Q) Or, do you have any thoughts around the inclusion of music?(Interview Q)
However, the music, just like the Virti-Cue icon, is also our way of promoting our product! Therefore, we may say, no questions refer to this as we, as a design team, will not make concessions here? Or, change the question somehow, to ask whether its too long, short? Remember though, what Michele pointed out: ask the question and it begs an answer, whether it’s important or not. I guess in the presentation we could admit that this is an undecided area for us at the moment.

Another thought...we should probably mention the role the DECIDE framework plays in this evaluative process, so:(I agree-Vg)

Hi all,

Robin, I have gone through both the Camtasia version and the .pdf file for the parallel design...all is fantastic! I’m so happy that you found Camtasia and PinPoint although I still don’t know how you did!! Thank goodness you did though...Jing Hell otherwise!
By the way, an earlier question that I found down the page in the Wiki referred to a possible opening/beginning music motif...do we still want this...I’ll be happy to create a wee something using instruments only? In fact I have a little Jeannette melody that I already created for something else. Any interest or not?

I on to the PowerPoint now..missed yesterday...some dad upset...he is totally in denial at this point and becoming quite hard to deal with.

I've drafted up a script and posted it in our wiki in the "Tutorial in progress" page. Take a look and see if it fits with our vision. I have kept it brief so it can be read within the 1 - 2 minute time frame. Also, read my note in the wiki regarding the icon pictures and social story pictures.

Just got to your email...
We have just found out that my dad Is going into a Hospice situation and my sister and I have been dealing with a lot of related legal stuff this week. After I send this I will not be home until Sunday...I am so sorry.

When I return, Sunday, I will get right on it and be a functioning group member! (My family leave for England on Saturday...I take to airport etc. then take care of my Mum and Dad overnight)

I am sorry that the Jing idea was so troublesome but if you have found a better alternative, then a sincere thank you.
(I did manage a bit of time to scan the essays yesterday and have posted to our other Wiki with some additions.)

Also, a quick thought, iMovie is easy to narrate into, and so is Garage-band. We can add the narration as we view the pre-recorded animations, put together in either of these application, from Jing if you like? The curser idea sounds very appropriate and functional....good find!
When I can, I’ll also download and have a look at the two apps. you found.
Sorry this is all on you...if you can leave stuff until Monday, I could meet up with you, Robin, and we can problem solve together if needed? Let me know.

Actually, I’ll take the laptop with me and try to keep a track of what’s happening...

Hi everyone, I tried a couple of test runs with Camtasia and I think it will be perfect for us. Check out the sample video on the tutorial in progress wiki tab, or the file attached. Let me know what you think. If we like this, Jeannette, then I don't think that you and I need to meet early to work on it. It will be a matter of recording with the narration and then blending the clips together, which can be done in Camtasia, by the way. I really like the app from what I've seen so far. Robin P.s. The sample is really short – I just wanted to get a sense of what it would look/sound like. I like it … With someone else's voice, of course!!

  • After messing around with one slide, taking jings, and trying to animate, I think we need to change our technique. I took 90 jings on the arrow moving on one slide, and still the animation was choppy (with 10 more slides to go, I don't think I can face another 900 jings!!). The circle cursor can be moved in 'real time' to indicate the correct buttons to press. When you click on the cursor, the centre turns red, indicating the click, and drawing further attention to the appropriate button. We may end up with a series of 'mini recordings' from each of our 10 slides that we can then merge together for the final product. I'm not sure that you can record and add narration all at once using jing, so am going to download a free 30 day trial of Camtasia <http://www.techsmith.com/download/camtasia/> , which I believe allows you to do so. In this case then, all we will need to do is 'click, narrate, move the cursor, and voila!' we will have our video.

  • set a meeting date: February 23 - in the cafeteria of the Ed Block at 4:30 - Chris won't get there until 5:15 or so ... Robin & Jeannette will perhaps meet earlier - to do the Jings - we could meet before that date too, Jeannette and get this niggly work out of the way - may make for a more productive meeting on the 23rd.
